Le secrétariat du SCAR annonce la parution de la newsletter de septembre 2020.

Introduction from the Executive Director

Welcome to the September edition of the SCAR Newsletter. We have a great selection of news and from SCAR Groups and the wider Antarctic community this month.

We are delighted to announce that SCAR has partnered with ECO Magazine (along with APECS and Arctic Circle) on a Polar Special Issue. This free digital exclusive features articles from the polar research community on Life Above and Below the Ice, Polar Environments, Humans at the Poles, Innovation in Frozen Seas and more.

SCAR’s GRAPE Expert Group (standing for GNSS Research and Application for Polar Environment) has published a White Paper on Atmosphere and Geospace.
Also published this month is the meeting report of the Geothermal Heat Flow side meeting held during SCAR 2020 Online.

In this newsletter we feature Abhilash Nair’s 2019 SCAR Fellowship Report, who was hosted by GNS Science in New Zealand. The 2020 round of SCAR Fellowships is now closed but our Visiting Scholar Scheme is open until 15th October. This year the scheme is taking current travel restrictions into account and will be flexible regarding the timing of the stay. We also welcome applications for virtual activities.

This month we warmly welcome Dr Susie Grant of the British Antarctic Survey as new Chief Officer of the SCAR Standing Committee on the Antarctic Treaty System (SC-ATS), taking over from Dr Aleks Terauds who has served in this role for several years. Normally, SCAR would have celebrated Dr Terauds’ contributions at our Delegates meeting during a formal transition, but owing to the global pandemic, this was not possible. We warmly thank Dr Terauds for his contributions over the years.

As always, our newsletter also features a range of news from the wider Antarctic community, opportunities, as well as online events. Please do get in touch with us if you’d like to share your news or photos with us.

Wishing you a pleasant month,

Chandrika Nath
SCAR Executive Director
